In January 2016, Sony created a new company that will run all PlayStation operations and related business. The new company has been born out of a merger between Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), which is the division that was responsible for making the PlayStation hardware; and Sony Network Entertainment (SNE), which operates the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Network (PSN) along with other media streaming services such as PlayStation Vue. PlayStation Vue is a cloud-based on demand TV Service which has been newly released in the USA. There is no currently UK release date.
The new company has been called Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) and will be based in San Mateo, California.
This is an aggressive move by Sony to ensure that it retains and grows it's share of the worldwide console market through improved products and services. The company said:
"SIE will vigorously expand the PlayStation business by delivering an integrated experience built around best-in-class games and network services to consumers worldwide."
The creation of this new company demonstrates Sony's aim to increase its focus in the area that is making the most profits, the PlayStation.
What does this mean for us?
Essential, nothing will change from our perspective. We will still be buying the PlayStation from the same range of retailers and we will still be logging on to the same PlayStation Network using our existing user accounts.
Sony have demonstrated their commitment to the PlayStation and the Future. And surely this can only be a good thing for us, the consumers. Sony will continue to deliver higher and higher quality games consoles and services to us, the consumer. The future's looking bright for gamers and lovers of technology. We can't wait to hear what the PlayStation 5 will bring!
